Policy Spotlight: Promotion
- Increase promotion of the incredible talents of our students.
The Union is great at promoting a range of student events however I feel it could still be expanded. I want to see more promotion of activites, especially after things have taken place. It should be easier for students to be able to find out how fundraising events went, how a society holiday was or to see photos of volunteering projects.
One way of doing this would be changing the priority of the union plasma screens. Marketing has a stronghold on spaces at the moment and these should be freed up for societies and committees more.
Just a couple of helpers from my amazing campaign team. x
Experience: Sheffield RAG
Role:
My official title on the committee is ‘Societies and Clubs Liaison’, part of the Adopt a charity (AAC) team. It is my job to act as a contact between societies and sports clubs of the Union and RAG, making sure that student groups get everything they need.
This means I have regular meetings with a range of student groups, helping formulate creative fundraising ideas and managing event plans alongside the Community Fundraising Intern (a full time Union employee).
What I’ve learnt:
The AAC scheme has taught me how societies, committees, sports clubs and faith groups operate as a team and the motivations that lie behind their activity; what is most important to them. Vitally, from meeting groups so regularly I have valuable communication skills; I can hold productive meetings that are enjoyable to both myself and others.
All my experience:
- Sheffield RAG: Societies and Clubs Liaison 11-12, RAG General 10-11
- Forge Press Contributor 11-12
- Tapton CDC 09-10
- Student Volunteer 09-10
- IM History Netball Player 09-12
- History Course Guide 11
Policy Spotlight - Space
- I will fight to ensure societies are a key benefactor in the redevelopment of University House. I will make sure that you get the space you need in your union.
At the moment, the Union is a great space to socialise or work in and as a result it is very popular, especially at peak times. However, groups are forced to book rooms far in advance. We need more space to suit student activity, both for leisure and meetings.
Also linked to this is the high costs for societies to use University buildings. We need to improve the Union’s relationship with the University to stop this happening. It is not fair that societies are forced to host their events outside the student community to escape high costs.
For more ideas please read them on my Facebook event.
More supporters, yesterday, sharing their ideas about what they want to improve or change at the Union.
Pop down to the concourse, next week, to have your say and chat to me about activities. Or you can always send me a tweet and post on the facebook event.
Policy Spotlight: Society Calendar
- Encourage better cooperation among societies by making groups more aware of what other societies are doing.
I think societies should work together more! At the moment, the desire to work with different groups definitely exists but societies don’t know how to initiate things. They may know very little about other societies and what they have got planned. This leads to fruitless emails.
I would like to create a ‘society calendar’; a physical space in the Zone or an online page where societies can communicate their ideas and the events they have planned. This way other groups can register their interest and make cooperation automatically easier and more successful.

Policy spotlight: Budgeting Advice
- Liaise with the Societies Development Coordinator to make more information about budgeting and organising cheaper student events accessible to societies.
With tuition fees rising next year budgeting advice will need to be adapted in order to respond to tighter student spending. I will bring more advice and support to societies so they have the ability and confidence to create cheaper student events and activities. Student choice and opportunity should not suffer because of the ridiculous fees imposed!
High up on the soapbox. Sadly you can’t see the enourmous, engaged and enthusiastic crowd right in front of me.
The slogans that never made it:
- Top Cat for Activities! (was my first choice but Kat Dawson running for President had the same idea so we both changed).
- Vote Cat: She’s purrrfect (eeeww)
- Vote Cat cos she’s all that!
- Activity Cat
Can you think of anything better?
